Health Services

The overall health and wellness of our school, students and employees, is an area we are committed to supporting and improving on a daily basis. The health and wellness department is comprised of six full-time employees, but we believe all members of the Academy community share a responsibility to help maintain a healthy and well school.

Our department focuses on helping others to help themselves. By providing 24 hour, seven days a week coverage, we are committed to supporting our community whenever there is a need. We take a holistic approach believing that the mental, physical, and spiritual wellbeing of our students is important and allows them to be at their best in the learning environment. We are the first line of care for our boarding students on a daily basis and provide care for over 10,000 visits from students and staff each year. We provide emergent medical care, ongoing care of illness and injuries, long and short-term counseling, maintain state regulated health information, crisis intervention, family wellness and mediation, wellness coaching and education, and communication assistance between other medical professionals as well as community resources. We believe strongly that developing and maintaining positive relationships is invaluable in order to help our community to be at its best.

St. Johnsbury Academy believes that health and well-being play a critical role in a child’s ability to learn, focus, and succeed academically. When families and children have access to proper nutrition, sleep, mental health support, and safe environments, students are better prepared to engage in school and reach their full potential. Supporting the overall well-being of families helps create a strong foundation for academic success and lifelong learning.

Substance Use Prevention and Cessation:

Vaping exposes users to nicotine, which is highly addictive and can harm adolescent brain development, affecting attention, learning, and mood. Aerosol from e-cigarettes can also contain harmful chemicals and heavy metals that may damage the lungs and cardiovascular system. Mental Wellness Support:

Seeking mental health support can help people manage stress, anxiety, and life challenges while improving overall well-being. Organizations like the National Alliance on Mental Illness emphasize that early support and open conversations about mental health can lead to better coping skills and stronger emotional resilience. Mental health support is available in Caledonia County through local organizations like Northeast Kingdom Human Services, which provides counseling, crisis intervention, and community mental health services for children, adults, and families.

If someone is experiencing a mental health crisis, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline and Vermont’s Mobile Crisis teams offer free, confidential support 24 hours a day. Seeking help and connecting with local resources can strengthen mental wellness and ensure individuals receive the care and support they need.
